Placemaking on and around the water
On the exact spot where once the Brussels' harbour could be found, we now have a big water basin and fountain. A huge surface of "unused" public space. Sint-Katelijne in Dutch or Sainte-Cathérine in French is a place with plenty of fish restaurants and shops but with a lack of possibilities to play and interact without having to consume.
After the big blows Brussels received after the terrorist attacks, Make.brussels, a call for projects to enhance the economy and the image of the European capital, was created. After some reflection, Urban Foxes decided to participate with a simple yet poetic idea. Transforming the Fish Market into a place of wonder, playfulness and encounter.
Urban Foxes came up with the idea of providing people with little sailboats, free of charge, no matter the age. Bringing people together by playing in public space. The main goal of this project is trying to improving social cohesion by a common project. We believe that playing together with little sailing boats and spending time together will improve urban well-being for young and old. We named the project Saint-Cath-sur-Mer, a deliberate linguistic error, focussing on the slang that is used to refer to this neigborhood being 54 /sain-kat/, cinque & quatre in French.
After reaching the top 3 in a voting contest (first round), the creative marathon (the finals) were used to construct a detailed plan. Urban Foxes were one of the ten winners that came out of this final, and received the green light to materialize their idea. That's why:
Another part of this placemaking process were the workshops "how to create your own sailing boat" during the winter time. A series of workshops in the different neighborhoods of the city of Brussels were held. Painting, woodwork, upcycling, stitching and sewing are a few of the subthemes of these creative classes with one common theme: water. The results, a unique sailing boat per neighborhood, will be presented during the re-opening of the sailing season in spring, creating a parade of crazy handmade Brussels' sailing boats and offering another wonderful moment of shared wonder.
